Philadelphia International Airport
Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) is the only major airport serving the 5th largest metropolitan area in the United States. PHL and Northeast Philadelphia Airport (PNE), PHL's general aviation reliever airport, are owned and operated by the City of Philadelphia. The Airport is a self-sustaining entity that operates without the use of local tax dollars. It is one of the largest economic engines in Pennsylvania, generating more than $14.4 billion in spending to the regional economy, and accounts for more than 141,000 jobs within the region.
In 2010, PHL accommodated 30.8 million passengers, including 4.2 million international passengers, and handled 460,779 aircraft takeoffs and landings. Twenty-nine airlines offer nearly 620 daily departures to 123 cities, including 36 international destinations. Nearly 441,000 tons of cargo and mail are moved annually by commercial airlines and a half-dozen cargo carriers. www.phl.org/phlstats.html
PHL has undergone more than $1 billion in capital improvements since January 2000. Completed projects include the opening of two new terminals: Terminal F (June 2001), a 185,000 square foot facility consisting of 38 gates accommodating US Airways Express; and international Terminal A-West (May 2003), a magnificent 800,000 square foot, 4-level complex with 13 international boarding gates, modern, spacious federal inspection and ticketing areas and a uniquely designed International Arrivals Hall.
Since 2001, PHL's gate capacity has increased by 94% from 65 to 126. The Terminal D/E Connector (December 2008) features a combined 14-lane security checkpoint equipped with state-of-the-art X-ray machines and 10 food, beverage and retail stores. The $45 million Terminal E Expansion (February 2010) features 7 new aircraft gates, a 500-seat waiting area, 4,000 square feet of concessions space, new restrooms and new permanent artwork. The new combined 9,000 square foot D/E baggage claim (February 2010) has 2 new carousels and new restrooms.
Located seven (7) miles from downtown Philadelphia, the Airport is easily accessible from Interstates 76, 95, and 476. In addition, rail service to the Airport is available on SEPTA'S High Speed Aiport Line train that operates from 5:25 AM until 11:25 PM daily, every 30 minutes, with easy connections to AMTRAK at 30th Street Station and regional rail lines at 30th Street, Suburban and Market East stations.
